“The first condition of understanding a foreign country is to smell it.” – Rudyard Kipling

If you're like us one of the things you look forward to the most when you travel is the food! Then when you are back, you continuously talk about the food you ate (along with some, most likely, unflattering pictures of the dishes) and insist on trying to:

a) find a local restaurant that does it b) try to recreate the meal at home

Invariably, it never tastes the same...

Due to our love of all things travel and food, we were more than delighted to be set the #tasteoftravel challenge by our friends at Bunks and Beaches! It's a great idea which was started by Celebrity Cruises where they challenged bloggers to come up with a dream three course travel menu....

Drooling yet?

After reading a few other menus to get our creative tastebuds going, we debated long and hard the merits of different dishes to get this right - and we were starving at the end!

As it is Blue Monday - apparently the most depressing day of the year - it seemed the perfect day to share our dream #tasteoftravel menu with you:

Starter

escargot
escargot

Escargot, France Yep, snails is our DREAM starter. Once you get past the shock and novelty (and after the photos) this is the perfect starter to get you ready for a meal. The way we would describe snails is - imagine if garlic bread and squid/calamari had a baby...that's escargot! You got to try it at least once and if you then don't like it, fair enough, but we bet you will! It usually gets served with some bread so make sure you dip it in the garlic butter that drips out...gorgeous! Just make sure you watch Pretty Woman so you know how NOT to eat it...

Main

banana leaf curry
banana leaf curry

Banana Leaf Curry, Malaysia This dish took a lot of thought and was by far the hardest one to choose. Eventually it had to be Banana Leaf Curry from Malaysia! It's both the tastiest thing with the perfect amount of flavour and spice (due to you choosing what to have) and it's beautifully presented on glorious banana leaf giving it added colour. We don't know about you, but we are firm believers of colour giving food added flavour and this is the perfect example! Just make sure you know which way to fold the banana leaf when you're finished...If you enjoyed the meal you fold it towards you, if you didn't like it or it's a sad occasion you fold the banana leaf away from you.

99 flake icre cream
99 flake icre cream

99 Flake Ice Cream, Mr Whippy Ice Cream Van Being from England, the 99 Flake from the Mr Whippy van is sacred. The tinny noise of the music that generates your excitement is only bettered by the taste of whatever-it-is that makes the 99 Flake so tasty, and thus, iconic! Perfect way to finish a meal :)
